Math Olympiad - Grades 4, 5 & 6

Does your child love math and problem-solving? Would they like “hanging out” and having fun with other math-loving kids? Then become a mathlete and join the Math Olympiad team! This team will push and challenge your child while participating in fun math challenges and competitions!

Your school’s Math Olympiad Team is an online, after-school math competition team for students in 4th through 6th grade. Synchronous virtual training sessions will be held weekly at 4:00 pm (Tuesday - PCR; Wednesday - PCY; Thursday - LCE). Asynchronous math challenges will be posted on Google Classroom in between. This program will last from September to March. Students on the Math Olympiad Team will have the opportunity to participate in up to four math competitions, including MOEMS, Mathzilla!, United We Math and Math Field Day, depending on contest and local rules amid the ongoing the COVID-19 crisis.

This year we have space for a maximum of 25 students per team (75 total, 4th through 6th grade). If your child is interested, please add them to the interest list by 8/31/20. Once the Interest List closes on 8/31/20, students will be placed on teams based on district-wide criteria. Interest List Sign-Up does not guarantee a place on the team. Based on the number of students interested, a waitlist may be formed. Once teams have been formed, students and parents will be notified by the end of day on 9/4/20 with instructions for how to register and process donations. Class will start the week of September 8th (after Labor Day).

Team selections are prioritized in the following way:

  • Participation in the LCUSD GATE program
  • 2018-2019 mathematics CAASPP scores for 5th and 6th graders

  • 2019-2020 mathematics grades on Trimester 1 and 2 report cards for 4th graders

Please note that Math Olympiad is not a math remediation course or a child-care option. Although this is a recreational after-school activity, Math Olympiad will be an enjoyable experience to students who possess strong math skills and enthusiasm for problem-solving. We ask for a donation of $100 for the season (September to March). This donation covers materials and instruction. Donations are non-refundable once Math Olympiad season starts.
